I've had a quick look back through the teams of the 50's but can't see the name. I'll have a look through the history book later and post on here if I find anything.

I wonder if you are thinking about the Bournemouth Gasworks ground that was on the opposite side of the road from The Rec. It had a large stand and was totally enclosed, the BG were a decent team to play for, but not sure if that extended to the 50's.
I cannot recall when PTFC moved to the Stadium, but I started watching them in 1960 and they had been there a while then, although the introduction of the greyhounds around that time changed the pitch and surrounds a fair bit!

An update - Poole Town moved to the stadium in 1933. Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic FC were playing decent standard of football in the 1950's so very possible that your Grandad had something to do with them.
Try Googling the club and find the wikipedia site for more info

Garry, I didn't know you were a '50' basher - how dreadful sir.. Closet Spotter just like Trev. I can't find a piccie or a mention in the Poole Town history book of your Grandad. I reckon he played for the Gasworks team. Didn't they play the other side of Branksome Rec where the 'new' houses were built? A link for you chief: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bournemouth_Gasworks_Athletic_F.C.

Did the football and cricket club share the same ground ? If so it might be worth looking under the Cricket club as well. My father informed me he used to play cricket over the road from the bungalow where he used to live in the 50's, from memory the number was 73 and is right opposite the gas works.

I've got some pictures of the Gasworks sports ground somewhere I'll try to did them out. No team photos I'm afraid.
Ironic that there are objections to the rec proposal when a ground that must have held more than Poole Stadium used to be just across the road.
I remember seeing the main stand pulled down before we moved into the new houses in Dereham Way in 1966. I was 4 at the time.
There were and proably still are bit of terracing and a wall in our back garden.

I was born on the corner of Yarmouth Road right next to the Gasworks and ground, not a 'stones throw' from the rec, my birth certificate states, Registration district - Poole. Many descendants of my family lived at the other end of the rec in Albert Road. Here is an old photo of a family wedding at the rear of one of the houses in Albert Road, dated August 4th 1920. I've got the biggest bottle of bubbly on ice if BR is given the go ahead.

Can't find the photos which is a shame because it was a hugely impressive ground with a massive main stand. Then again they were a big club in their day reaching the Amateur Cup Final. I'd have thought that if some decent pictures of the club could be found it would help the rec application in a "football's coming home" sort of way. If a relative played for the Gasworks in the 50s seems likely he would have known John Ford. his family might have more information.

Both my Father and my Uncle played for the Town in the late 40's and early 50's and while I am aware of John Powell's book it is unfortunately out of print.
However there must be some source or sources where I can hopefully find lists of teams from that era and possibly photos.
Of particular interest are the F.A. Cup games against QPR in 1946 as I think my Father played in one or both matches. Any information would be much appreciated.
