Wowee Mell49.... what a connection to the history of PTFC When I started to watch "The Town" Ted Kerslake was the mgr of the reserves but still turned out as and when. Never saw Bill Langley, but by that time, mid 50s, he had become a legend!! ...and now our reborn club is carrying the name of Poole forward. What an exciting time for PTFC and thx Mell49 for keeping us in touch with our past.
And more great history is about to be written!!
TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN!!!

I was still keeping in touch with Bill Langley in Australia where he has lived for a number of years but sadly has passed away now. Very sorry to hear that. I never saw him play but I did get to meet him in Australia. Just before Bill emigrated my older brother, then a young man, sent him a letter and received a lovely response from his hero. Then in 1979 I went to Perth, WA with my parents to visit my late father's best friend. My father tracked down Bill Langley to the electrical shop he ran, walked in, and silently handed over Bill's response to my brother. There was a brief pause then Bill's face lit up like a picture. He was insistent that we visit him and his wife at their home, and even took us out for a meal (my first ever time in a Chinese restaurant as I recall). Bill Langley was a lovely man and he and my father were able to recount many old games and tales together. He didn't forget to check whether I was a supporter or how the Dolphinswere doing at that time! A Poole Legend, still warmly remembered by my family, may he rest in peace.

Had the pleasure of meeting the great Stan Rickaby a cpouple of years ago at Tatnam when he came to sign copies of his autobiography, he was holding court in the portacabin, and i must admit, i was in awe of him after listening to the stories from my dad. Also older fans will remember, i worked for a few years with Harry Delew, who i think, played for the Town in the 40's. Harry is happily still with us,& i still see him regulary in Broadstone.

I was born in Wycombe, so support the Chairboys I think my first Poole Town game was when they had a friendly against Wycombe Wanderers played at the Hamworthy ground. At least I think that was my first I did also watch Poole Town play at Holt for a while, and I think that was after the Wycombe friendly. Any chance getting Wycombe down here again? ;D

Last game of the 1966/67 season as I recall. Home against Bedford Town.

I think the first game I saw was in 1947 with approx the same team described by Mel 49 but I think you will find it was Bill Leck not Stan Leck playing at that time. Stan was Bill's younger brother and did not figure in the team till about 1950. I believe that both brothers played together for a while until Bill then Stan went to Hamworthy Utd. I also remember that Poole always played in blue and white squares (like Bristol Rovers) but with blue shorts, when did they change to their current strip ?

Old days would have been Poole v Newport County in the FA Cup at the Stadium. Under the new regime, my first game back was Spennymoor last season. Will never leave again!
Spent a few years supporting Wimborne whilst playing across the road at Allendale. We all make mistakes!!!

I remember the blue and white Bristol Rovers type strip rushmere. Have a look at John Powell's book on the history of PTFC 1890- 2003'ish for the colours. There have been a number of changes over the years but red and white was the preference (usually stripes) for the great majority of the years of PTFC's history. We had an interesting debate on the forum a year or two ago when - if I recall correctly - most people thought that the present red and white halves was fine and should continue but that the pale blue change strip (and - of course - it IS CHANGE strip NOT away strip i.e. for use only when there is a clash of colours with the home side!) would be better as yellow shirts and blue shorts to reflect the 80s as remembered by many fans. A Brazil colours strip was introduced for away clashes but I don't know if it is still in use; I am not able to get to many games. What do you think?

Rushmere and Brian... Memories of blue and white squares, Bill Foster, Mike Gorman, Harry Delew Jock Salter..and the one and only Harry "Puskas"Merrett ..Our ressies in those days took on the maestros from Clandown. Radstock, Street. Wells city and Peasedown Miners Welfare and i think a works team called Hoffmans athletic !! 200 for a reserve match There was a post re low attendance at our res games 1. Play in the DPL. As the largest urban area in Dorset we should be more prominent in Dorset Football. Weymouth Res has to be a more attractive feature than Moneyfields Res and play on a Saturday when the working world(what's left of it) can turn out if they want 2. Co-opt by fair means or foul Poole Boro's place to do it Again I moan TOO many teams scratching the surface in the ancient Borough 3., Use all current tech to keep attendees up to snuff on the first team games as they are happening ,put up some TVs in the stand and get some highlights on..we are in the age of multi-tasking aren't we?? ..and don't forget TATNAM TWO THOUSAND coming up!!!

Thank you Brian for your note regarding the book about Poole Town F.C History. Any ideas where I can purchase a copy ?
Turning to the various colours Town have played in, your comment about Poole playing in red and white stripes reminded me that when I was lucky to be picked for Poole Schoolboys we played in those same colours. So it may appear that red and white are traditional. However wouldn't it be nice for us (much) older supporters to see the change strip as blue and white squares again.

There are two recent books on Poole Town FC history, John Powell's book covers the period 1890-2005 and my book 'Poole Town Football Club - Records and Statistics - 2000/2001 to 2008/2009' compiled by David Warhurst, is a follow on from John Powell's book. Unfortunately both books are now out of print. It would be possible to re-publish my book but I would need to know positive numbers required before a reprint run.

Thanks dave2. I have a copy of John Powell's book and I'd buy one of yours if it is ever re-published.
rushmere - the debate we had on the forum about colours ended with most people favouring yellow shirts and blue shorts as the CHANGE (NOT AWAY!!!!) strip. Many people recalled these colours from the eighties I think.

Now whilst this thread is almost dead and buried, I feel compelled to contribute. My first game would have been a game around Christmas time, can't remember who it was against - but it must have been the 05/06 season, as it was just before I started school at Oakdale - just a couple months later I was playing football on the same pitch!. I went down with my dad and uncle and I can remember the floodlights and the halftime results being read out. As I was so young, I never was able to regularly attend but I almost always caught the Poole Vs Bournemouth pre-season friendlies - sometimes I got in for free due to vouchers being handed out at school.
I've now started to regularly attend (15 home games in a row, (Including friendlies) hoping to make it at least 30 in a row by the end of the season) and hope to start regularly attending away matches - my first experience with the long, hot, sweaty ride up to Banbury hasn't deterred me at all! I think this thread should be a rite of passage for all new fans - sharing what compelled them to sign up and follow the mighty Dolphins!

Hi Brian, Hope you are well? yes, Yellow shirts and Blue shorts would be most favourable - espeically as I remember with fondness this strip in the eighties!! Oh to think back of mssrs Funnell & Baber running around the stadium in these colours!!

Are there any copies of John Powell's book available? Or is an update being planned as Poole Town celebrates its 125th Birthday on the 20th September?

As my dolphin47 log in is no more and thinking it would be good to hear some more 'Your first PTFC match' quotes..
Again my first game was actually Poole Town v Newport County (FA Cup) on the 20th November 1983 (Aged 8) I was hooked from then on and also 'ball boyed' and also took the corner flags in after each game I attended.
Tony Funnell was to become my boyhood hero from that day onwards and was delighted his son Gary also wore the PTFC shirt in the later years at Tatnam

My dad took me to my first match and told me that Stan Rickaby was playing. My most memorable moment was going away to Watford an amazing day. Amusing moment was Ray Ames performance in the 4th qualifying round of the cup I can't remember the team it was the year we went on to play Newport County.

I suspect I'm in the usual place behind the goal retrieving any errant balls!
