My son in law is,for his sins,a Tottenham Fan. I note they won tonight(daughter breathes a sigh of relief!1 The match was played in Budapest at the Puskas Stadium. Some of us remember when English football was shocked by Puskas and the Hungarians giving us a right old thrashing at Wembley I digress. PTFC were playing friendlies under the lights at the BOPSA and our very own Puskas,Harry Merritt complete with both legs bandaged up and bathed in linament was out there. Harry was a skilled player but age was beginning to tell and merciless was the good natured barracking from the home fans Harry "Puskas" Merritt. Another PTFC legend.

You’re very good at bringing back memories expat. I can still remember, as a youngster, being shocked and devastated when Hungary thrashed England 6-3! And it was at Wembley too. The return fixture in Budapest was, as I recall, Hungary 7 England 1. Didn’t Puskas and co get the nickname “magic Magyars”? I still believe that that Hungarian side should have won the following World Cup.
Poole must have been one of the first clubs to have floodlights, certainly outside of the Football League. As for Harry Merritt, your description of him is perfect. I met him once on Whitecliff Rec. That must have been close to the end of Harry’s playing days because I recall being bold enough to enquire if he was considering signing for Longfleet Saint Mary’s, their home ground being nearby on Whiteckiff. Legend indeed!
